.... In Muslamic countries...

This weekend in Chicago at the presentation of a visiting missionary couple, I met... that guy.

He had a comb over and dressed about 15 years behind the times. As soon as I entered the room he started a conversation, and it quickly became clear that he thought he was pretty well-informed on the topic of missions and the world, and that he felt compelled to share his great knowledge with the rest of the room. The rest of the room silently cringed every time he raised his hand to ask a question. By the end of the session it was so ridiculous it was just funny.

For instance, this family is headed to Nepal. In the middle of their presentation he raised his hand and asked how many seasons they have over there. Random. The missionaries answered that there were actually five seasons, the usual four and then monsoon season when it rains a lot. That guy rolled his eyes and loudly said under his breath, "Oh, that's Spring, but whatever."

Ooookay then.

Probably worst of all was when the wife, who is Korean-American, was describing the surprising conversion of South Korea from a predominately Buddhist nation to a Christian nation. That guy raised his hand and said, "I have traveled A LOT, and every place I go there are dry cleaners, which are always Korean-owned, and they all have a sword next to the register."

Umm... oh man. First of all, sword=Bible. Secondly, you clearly haven't traveled far if you haven't been to a place without dry-cleaners. Thirdly, you just blatantly took a reference to Korean Americas and equated them all directly with dry cleaners. OH MY GOSH.

*shakes head*

And finally, I absolutely loved it when he decided to share his thoughts on Muslim culture with the group. He leaned back in his chair, crossed his arms, and proceeded to very seriously tell us all about the way it is in Muslamic countries.

Seriously. He said Muslamic three times.

I tried my very hardest not to laugh.

OK, so besides the obvious, do you think there was something actually WRONG with him? Like, mentally? Or wsa he just THAT obnoxious (not that being that obnoxious is that far-fetched, unfortunately).

I don't think anything was wrong with him - he's a baker, apparently, and a very good baker. I think he's just one of those socially awkward people that tries to compensate by being MORE outgoing rather than more withdrawn. For some reasons those types seem drawn to the church - probably because they aren't rejected there.

I'm glad of that, but still... annoying!

I would have had a hard time not laughing, too. Or feeling very humiliated for the family presenting.

Wow. Yeah, unfortunately sometimes "that guy" shows up... Always the one that thinks he (or she!) knows it all, and everyone except him knows that he DOESN'T know it all. Just very cringe-inducing and annoying... and something to laugh about later!!!

"you clearly haven't traveled far if you haven't been to a place without dry-cleaners" THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING!

Besides, everybody knows it's Chinese people who own dry cleaners. :-)
