Exhibit A of a flash mob in China when a white person does something interesting

The university that our English program was at is an hour outside of a big city in a small town. They never see Westerners there, so we got a lot of attention whenever members of our groups traipsed around the town.

One day I walked out of a grocery story to this site:

See the bald head in the middle? That's one of our team. He was chatting with someone and had pulled out a photo of his three blond grandchildren. Instant flash-mob.

Most of the time it wasn't a mob. Usually it was just the old folks who would follow us around and stare. I just loved them. They were always white-haired and a little bent over, and they'd walk up to our group and just lean in to see what was going on... and they'd just stand there, leaning in and watching curiously.

For instance - one day we went downtown. Immediately this happened - see the old folks on the right watching curiously?

They started to get a bit closer:

And eventually we got used to having a person or two like this guy, always peering into our discussions:

I love it... I found them so endearing. I decided that if my grandfather was Chinese, he'd definitely be the guy with the green bag in this pic:
